October 2016

October has come for the farm!  With over 3” of rain on the farm in the past 7 days, and a consistent temperature in the low 50’s it is definitely fall in Western Washington.
This week we are harvesting the last of the beets and kohlrabi. They have been growing since late July, and boy have they grown!  We selected 2 varieties of kohlrabi, a purple and a green.  This is a second year testing our green variety, Superschmelz.  Superschmelz needs a lot of space, approximately 15” between plants.  As tiny plants in July, this felt very excessive, yet here we are with the rewards in October.  One of our largest plants weighed in at nearly 8 lbs after cleaning up the old leaves!  Despite this excessive size, the inside was creamy and sweet as ever.  Definitely a winner!

In addition to the work in the field, Chubby Bunny Farm is pleased to announce that we are signing up CSA shareholders for our very first CSA in 2017!  Time to buy seed is quickly approaching and through supporters such as yourself, we can ensure the most exciting varieties and a strong start to the new season.  More information on our CSA can be found at the top of the site.
Thank you for all of your support in 2016, from the bottoms of our hearts.  As we begin the busy office season, we will be happy to share our progress.  Despite the grey skies, our hearts are full of hope for the coming season!
